Suffolk Freemasons
Fire! Brethren ….At a Masonic dinner – what we call the Festive Board – following a toast, you may hear the word "Fire" called out, accompanied by a coordinated series of movements and claps. To those seeing it for the first time, it can seem unusual. But its origins are rooted in history. The practice derives from traditional military customs, where gun salutes and musket volleys were fired to honour important occasions or individuals. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it was also common to fire a volley after drinking a toast. As Freemasonry developed during this period, it naturally adopted elements of these wider customs – and Masonic Fire was born.In some Lodges, the tradition is expressed slightly differently, with specially designed firing glasses (pictured) being brought down onto the table in unison rather than clapping. It carries no deeper ritual meaning – it is part of the convivial, social side of Freemasonry. But in a military Lodge such as ours, it perhaps carries an added resonance – a small echo of the heritage many of our members share.✦ Inspired by the writings of V.W.Bro. Welcome to Freemasonry in Suffolk
Join a Legacy of Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Service

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest fraternal and charitable organisations. We stand as a beacon of hope in today’s uncertain times, offering a welcoming community open to men from all walks of life, regardless of race, religion, or political belief.

Rooted in the traditions of medieval stonemasons who crafted our majestic castles and cathedrals, we still use their symbols today. Our tools remind us that we are on a mission to ‘build’ better men and create a better world for everyone—no matter their background.

Embrace our guiding principles: Integrity, Friendship, Respect, and Service. These values are more crucial than ever as we navigate life’s challenges together. As a Freemason, you’ll not only enrich your own life but also positively impact those around you.

This website is your gateway to understanding Freemasonry and discovering how you can join us in our charitable efforts and social activities. Explore resources that answer your questions about membership, events, and how you can contribute to making the world a better place.

Together let’s build enduring friendships while creating lasting change in our communities—because when we work together with purpose and passion, we can achieve greatness!
